Library Foundation - Text Only
In the late 1980s, the Port Washington Public Library Foundation was formed to raise money privately for the benefit of the library. Established as a 501(c)(3) organization, the Foundation received permission from New York State in 1991 to begin its fundraising and grantmaking activities.
The Foundation was established primarily to solicit, receive, and manage bequests and endowments, and thus provide funds to enhance library services at no cost to taxpayers. The Foundation provides a means whereby those wishing to make significant and enduring tax-deductible contributions to the library can do so. Donations placed in care of the Foundation are invested, and subsequent income given to the library to enhance its programs and projects. Under the Foundation's by-laws, the Port Washington Public Library is the sole beneficiary of any fundraising activity of the Foundation.
The Foundation is chartered to be a "support" organization, and as such has made numerous grants for the benefit of the library. In 1995, the Foundation gave the library funds for the space study that led up to the construction and redesign project. In 1996, the Foundation funded the production of an oral history CD-ROM documenting Long Island aviation called Flight of Memory.
In 1997, the Foundation awarded funds to the library for the development of special collections, and also provided funding for a "Community Leader's Tour," followed by a second tour early in 1998. In May 1998, the Foundation provided the library with funds to undertake mechanical studies of the proposed expansion. The Foundation is committed to giving the library a substantial grant for new programs and services to be provided in the expanded library building.
As a result of the contributions made to the Foundation, it has recently funded The Family Place Project, the Local History Center, the state of the art video projection and sound system upgrades to the Meeting Room and other building enhancements, including furnishings, solar shades and acoustical treatments. To date, the Foundation has given over $285,000 to the library.
The Port Washington Public Library Foundation's activities are guided by a 7-person Board of Directors made up of one library trustee and members of the general public. Their meetings are open to the public.
