Library Borrowing Policies - Text Only

There are two (2) types of memberships available:

RESIDENTS OF PORT WASHINGTON: residents of the Port Washington School District must fill out an application form at the library. The application is then processed and a card mailed to the resident at his/her home address. There is no fee for this card (although there is a $1.00 fee for replacing a lost card).

EMPLOYED IN PORT WASHINGTON: person employed in Port Washington must enter on the application his/her place of employment, employer's address and telephone number. The library verifies the employment, processes the card and mails it to the employee's home address. There is no fee for this card (there is a $1.00 fee for replacing a lost card). This card must be updated yearly upon verification of employment. This type of card may only be used at the Port Washington Public Library and cannot be used for direct access borrowing at other libraries.

Library Borrowing Policies
Port Washington Public Library card holders (resident, employed in Port Washington, paying non-resident and summer resident) have full borrowing privileges, including children's, young adult and adult 7-, 14- and 28-day circulating books, periodicals, compact discs, audio cassettes, videos and book bags. Reference books may not be borrowed. Cardholders of any Nassau Library System member libraries (known as Direct Access borrowers) may use their cards at any facility in the system to borrow books. Some libraries, including Port Washington, will lend non-print media formats to non-residents with some restrictions. Non-residents can also ask their home library to obtain books, periodicals and non-restricted media items from us via Interlibrary Loan.

Fines and Fees
Fines:
Children's items (except videos): 5 cents per day per item
Children's videos: $1.00 per day per item
Adult videos: $1.00 per day per item
All other adult and Young Adult items (books, periodicals, books-on-tape, CDs, book bags): 10 cents per day per item

Fees:
Replacement library card: $1.00
Purchase of used/discarded book: 50 cents
