Top Hat, White Tie & Tails:
Fred Astaire
in VHS, CD & the Printed Page
Singer, dancer, choreographer, and actor Fred Astaire was born Frederick Austerlitz in Omaha, Nebraska on May 10, 1899. After a childhood in vaudeville, Fred won fame on Broadway dancing with his sister Adele. Despite the verdict on his screen test ("Can't act. Can't sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little."), Astaire redefined the movie musical in the 1930s in ten films co-starring Ginger Rogers. He was honored with a special Academy Award in 1949, and continued to perform in films and on television into the 1980s. Astaire died on June 22, 1987.
