Connern, James J.
- Correspondence, clippings and photographs documenting many of James Connern’s (1913-2005) activities in Port Washington. Connern worked for the National Bank of North Americal for 33 years and was active in numerous community activites in Port Washington. He served as the mayor of Manorhaven (1956-1958) and as Commissioner of the Port washington Water District from 1972 to 1975. 3 boxes; 1929-1960.

Cosmos Club
– The Club was founded in 1915 with 25 members, to “bring its members into close friendship, … [and] for the interchange of information.” Includes correspondence, minutes, membership lists, financial records, dinner menus, and mementos. 2 boxes; 1916 – 1977.

Daughters of America (Sterling Council, Branch 113)
– Records of the Sterling Council, Branch 113 of the Daughters of America in Port Washington, New York. Includes a book of meeting minutes, miscellaneous membership and enrollment records, printed booklets from the state and national organization, postcards of the National Home of the Daughters of America in Tiffin, Ohio, and a membership pin belonging to Edith McQuillin. 1 box; ca.1924 – 1939.

Dodge Family
– Documents and books from the Dodge family of Port Washington, New York, including genealogies, prayers and songs, agreements relating to goods, land and slaves, tax bills, cloth-weaving diagrams, samples of woven cloth, local property maps and sketches of boundaries, and copies of newspapers. Floherty, John J
- Hand-written and typed manuscripts by the author, John J. Floherty (1882-1964), who was a resident of Port Washington, New York for over 50 years. Also includes several photographs of Floherty. 2 boxes; ca. 1890-1962.

Fox, Fontaine
- Fontaine Talbot Fox (1884-1964) was a cartoonist whose “Toonerville Trolley” was syndicated in over 200 newspapers. Collection includes a color cardboard cut-out of Toonerville Town distributed by Coca Cola, and an unidentified photo of a trolley. 1 box; ca. 1930’s.

Fraser Family
– The papers include genealogical materials, memoirs, and reproductions of photos and documents relating to the history of the Fraser family in England and America. Alfred Fraser (1840-1915) was the first member of the family to be connected with Port Washington. 2 boxes; ca. 1840-2002.

Free Church of Manhasset
– Record book of the Church, founded in 1859 in Port Washington, including its by-laws and constitution, and lists of officers, committees and trustees. Family names include Burtis, Dodge, Hegeman, Hicks, Hyde, Mackey, Mitchell, Mott, Onderdonk, and Willets. 1 box; ca.1859-1882.

Galloway, William
-Photographs, copies of illustrations, and a few personal items pertaining to William Galloway, a policeman, artist, and resident of Port Washington, New York. 1 box; ca. 1930’s-1940’s.

General Council of Homeowner Associations of Port Washington
- Records pertaining to the activities of the General Council of Homeowner Associations of Port Washington, New York. The records include meeting minutes and agendas, correspondence, budgets and other official documents distributed by special taxing districts, reports and studies prepared and disseminated by the organization, and news clippings pertaining to the Council’s activities. 8 boxes; 1989-2003.

Hagedorn, Horace
- The collection includes a memorial tribute book and a video biography of Horace Hagedorn (1915-2005) who was a resident of Sands Point, New York. Hagedorn, advertising executive, business man, and philanthropist, was best known as the master mind behind the success of Miracle Gro fertilizer and related products. 1 box; 2004-2005.

Harrington, Edward F.

Johnson, Burges
- Johnson (1877-1963) was an author, humorist and educator. The collection consists of papers, ephemera and artifacts related to his years in Port Washington, New York, and includes his uniform and ribbon from the Atlantic Hook and Ladder Company. 2 boxes; 1904-1963.

Knickerbocker Yacht Club
-Records and memorabilia of the Knickerbocker Yacht Club including ledgers, meeting minutes, photographs, books and artifacts relating to the history of the Knickerbocker Yacht Club and its club members. 10 boxes; 1874-2009.

Landis, Henry K.
Landis, who was the editor of the local publication “Plain Talk”, returned to his Lancaster, Pennsylvania birth place in 1914, after several years in Port Washington. This collection consists of photocopies of the the originals in the Landis Valley Museum. It includes images of Port Washington, a log a of a North Shore saiboating trip made by Landis, John Witmer, Jr. and John Witmer, Sr., and a letter written by John Witmer, Jr. to Landis in 1955, describing changes in Port Washington and giving news of mutual friends. 1 box; ca. 1903-1955.

Landsman, Richard
– Material found above a ceiling at 8 Bayview Avenue in Port Washington, New York. Includes the first record book of Protection Engine Company, as well as postcards and papers. 1 box; ca. 1892 – 1930.

Larmour, Peter

Lewis Oil Company

Lewis, Sinclair

- Ledger recording the daily ticket sales at the Long Island Rail Road station in Port Washington, New York. 1 volume; 1898-1900.

– Records of the sail making company of Port Washington, New York, including correspondence, patent applications, blueprints, financial data, and a notebook of sail specifications and costs. 1 box; 1875-1975.

Mackey, James M.
– Receipts and accounts belonging to James Mackey of Long Island, New York. The receipts are for goods including foods, household items, dry goods, lumber, school tuition and supplies, and cash exchanges. 1 box; 1817-1851.

Markland, Kenneth

Martus, Virginia Marshall
– Virginia Martus was born and raised in Port Washington, New York. Her father, Raymond E. Marshall was the founder and owner of A & R Marshall, Inc., a marine service and supply business. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, post cards, clippings and artifacts relating to the history of Port Washington, nautical history, A & R. – Approximately 20,000 images (glass and safety negatives, with some prints) from the Mason Studio in Port Washington, New York. Mason-Malone
– Approximately 500 images of Port Washington, New York from the Mason Studio. These are copy prints made from the copy negatives donated by Hugh Malone. Images include churches, fire departments, hotels, people, schools, street scenes, post cards, and the waterfront. 3 binders and 1 box; ca. 1881-1971.

McKee Store Accounts and Family Papers
– Account records for the McKee store in Port Washington, New York (1894-1915) and information on the McKee family history. TheMcKee family had a store in Port Washington until 1940. 2 boxes; ca. 1870s – 1940s.

McQueen Local Business Collection
– Three handwritten account books documenting two 19th century businesses in Port Washington, New York.Two books were kept by a local weaver, John McQueen, and the other by a local shoemaker, George Remsen. Includes a group of news clippings and loose papers. 1 box; 1806 – 1852.

Meissner, Michael and Sarah Ann
– Deeds, mortgages, indentures, and other legal documents of Michael and Sarah Ann Meissner, and others, primarily concerning land in the Town of North Hempstead (Port Washington), New York. Also contains a Civil War letter from D.S. Johnston concerning camp life. 1 box; 1852-1907.

Merriman Park/Committee to Preserve Recreational Space in Port Washington

Monfort, Burtis H.

– The Music Study Club, founded in 1919, remains a vibrant cultural component of the Port Washington community. The records include minutes, reports, programs, photographs, and clippings documenting the history of the Club and its activities. 4 boxes, 1921-.

Nautical – Books
- This collection was donated by the Nautical Advisory Committee of the Port Washington Public Library. The collection, which spans the years 1883-2005, includes monographs, periodicals, and yacht club yearbooks. Subjects cover maritime history, yachting, boating, boat design, and ship building. Of local interest are works on the Long Island Sound, and histories of the local yacht clubs.

Nautical – Miscellaneous
– These collections are comprised of original documents, printed matter and photographs relating to the nautical history of Port Washington, New York and surrounding areas. Subjects and individuals include: Clam boats; Fall River Line Pottery; Nathaniel Herreshoff; Manhasset Bay Yacht Club; Purdy Boat Company; and Victor A. Romagna. 3 boxes and 1 volume; ca. 1923-2003.

North Hempstead Library Association
– This lending library was begun in 1791 by a group of area landowners, who contributed dues to purchase books, which were kept at the home of Dr. Samuel Mitchell. The collection consists of two record books documenting the regulations of the association, minutes, accounts, lists of books, names of subscribers, and expenditures.1 box; 1791-1895.

Olandt Family
– The collection is comprised primarily of photographs and glass negatives with prints. Images include the William and Anna Olandt family home at 15 North Maryland Avenue in Port Washington, New York, family members, friends and neighbors, and local firefighters from the Flower Hill Hose Company. Also included are the records of the Epworth League of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in which Mrs. Olandt was active. 2 boxes; ca.1906-1935.

Petersen, Oscar G.
– Two scrapbooks compiled by Oscar G. Petersen (d.1994) of Port Washington, New York. Includes a scrapbook of articles and photos on local aviation history. The second scrapbook contains photographs and newspapers clippings about Oscar Petersen, and documents pertaining to his father, Peter Petersen. 2 volumes; 1912-1963.

Photography Club of Long Island
– The first meeting of the organization, originally called the Port Washington Camera Club, was held on January 30th 1975. The collection includes correspondence, newsletters, publicity, clippings, exhibition programs and related material documenting the club’s history and activities. 3 boxes; 1975-2008.

Plain Talk
Plain Talk (1911-1914) was a local Port Washington bi-weekly magazine edited by Henry K. Landis. It provides information about businesses, civic life, and social events.

Port Washington Newspaper and Clipping Collection
– A collection of news items relating to the history of Port Washington, New York. The collection includes photocopies of articles about Port Washington from the Brooklyn Eagle (1898-1951). It also includes newspapers and clippings which cover major events in Port Washington’s history such as the 1938 hurricane and the building of the WEAF transmitter in 1940. 2 boxes and 1 oversized folder; 1863-1978.

Port Washington Post Office
– Primarily photographs documenting the construction of the Post Office at Main Street and Beacon Hill Road in 1935, and its later addition which was dedicated in 1965. Includes views of Main Street, businesses, automobiles and the Monfort Farm in the background. Also includes dedication programs, a 1947 photograph of an air mail helicopter delivery, and 2 clippings. 1 binder; 1935-1970.

Port Washington Postmaster’s Account Books
– Five account books kept by the postmaster at Port Washington, New York. Categories of accounts include daily sales of stamps, receipts and disbursements, unclaimed matter, and postal inventory. 1 box; 1901-1907.

Port Washington Public Library
– The Port Washington Public Library was founded as a cooperative book club in 1892 by the Port Washington Woman’s Club. The records include accession books, annual reports, ledgers, budget information, minutes, correspondence, circulation statistics, alphabetical files, clippings, photographs, printed matter and artifacts pertaining to the history of the library. 33 boxes and 9 volumes; ca. 1892-2005.

Port Washington Schools / Faiella Collection
– Includes school budgets, registers of attendance, lesson plan books, a handwritten school census, minutes, miscellaneous reports and newsletters, photographs of students, teachers and classroom interiors. 14 boxes; 1868-2008.

Port Washington Symphony Orchestra
– Posters and recordings of the Port Washington Symphony Orchestra (formerly known as the Port Washington Community Orchestra). Founded in the 1950’s, the orchestra performed at the Port Washington High School. 7 posters and 13 record albums; 1952-1958.

Port Washington Telephone Directories
– Collection includes business, residential, and reverse directories for some years. 1924-1956.

Reid, Helen Wicks
– Approximately 180 photographs (1 album and a folder of loose photos) documenting the family of Helen Wicks Reid in Brooklyn and Port Washington, New York. Local pictures include the Wicks home, the Mill Pond, and a fireman in the uniform of the Atlantic Company. 1 box; ca. 1893-1898.

Sands Point
– Photographs, negatives, brochures, programs, clippings and other printed matter relating to the history of Sands Point. Photos include images of prominent residents, estates, and buildings. Most of the material was assembled in 1985 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Village of Sands Point. 12 volumes and 1 box; ca. 1884-2005.

Schreiber High School Senior Gambol
- Photographs, news clippings, printed materials, ephemera, correspondence, and financial records from the Gambol, the senior prom of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, New York. 4 boxes and 2 binders; 1952-2004.

Simon, Ernie
– A journalist with a special interest in local history, Simon was active at the Port Washington News for over 50 years, and was the author of a series of articles entitled “Port Remembered.” Includes writings, memorabilia, and over 30 letters from Paul D. Schreiber, superintendent of Port’s schools from 1920 to 1935. 1box; ca. 1908-1976.

Smith Family
– Stephen B. Smith, Sr. was a resident of Port Washington and the father of Stephen B. Smith, Jr. and Isaac E. Smith. The collection consists of Stephen Smith’s receipts for wharfage, sail making, supplies and groceries. Also includes a marriage certificate for Isaac E. Smith and Mary Fearon. 1 box; 1867-1884.

Sons of Italy Columbus Collection
– 2 books purchased with funds donated by the local chapter of the Sons of Italy, in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage: Christopher Columbus, his own Book of Privileges – London: B.F. Stevens, 1893; The Letter of Columbus on his Discovery of the New World – [facsimile ed.] – Los Angeles: USC Fine Arts Press, 1989.

Sousa, John Philip
– 56 photographs of John Philip Sousa, his home in Sands Point, friends and family members, and his band. Also included are two photographs of fundraising activities for the Sousa Band Shell, and a program for a memorial concert held locally after his death. 1 binder; ca. 1870-1960’s.

Spier, Peter
Over 80 items including pen and ink drawings, ink wash drawings, proofs, and water colors by the noted children’s book illustrator, Peter Spier (b. 1927). 1 box; 1954-1964.

TELIcommunity Records
TELIcommunity was begun in 1980 as a not-for-profit organization to provide community access television for Long Island. The records of TELIcommunity include correspondence, minutes, printed matter and clippings documenting the history of the organization. 1 box; ca. 1980-1983.

Tibbits, Hall Jackson
- 29 photographs of the exterior, interior, and contents of the Tibbits Homestead at Sands Point. The house was built by Captain John Sands in 1712, and purchased by Captain Hall Jackson Tibbits in 1852. The photographs were used in an exhibit at the Port Washington Public Library in 1959. Also includes a typed press release prepared for the exhibit. Photographs are by William Gardner. 1 binder.

Village Welfare Society / Port Washington Community Services / Visiting Nurse Services
– Papers of a local charitable organization which originated in 1909 as the Sisterhood Club,was incorporated as the Village Welfare Society in 1915, and is currently known as Port Washington Community Services. Includes minutes, scrapbooks, photographs, financial papers, annual reports, and handbooks documenting the work of the organization. Also included are some records pertaining to the Visiting Nurse Service of the North Shore, Inc., and the Visiting Home Health Services of Nassau, Inc. 7 boxes; 1909 – 1988.

Wee Scot (Sailboat) Racing Association
– Records of a group formed by local owners of Wee Scot sailboats, who raced their boats in Long Island Sound. Includes correspondence, blueprints, sketches, racing regulations, boat specifications, and membership lists. 1 box; 1934 – 1939.

Wysong, Charles N.
– Wysong, a founder of the Port Washington Bank and Trust, served as District Attorney for Nassau County (ca. 1910-1913). Papers include documents, lists of local landowners, notebooks of narrative local history, and correspondence and other material relating to Wysong’s legal career and community service activities. 7 boxes; 1694 – 1938.

Zwerlein, Peter J.
- Photographs, clippings, correspondence, invitations, programs, badges, and other items relating to Zwerlein’s years as a member of Protection Engine Company No. 1, and as Chief of the Port Washington Fire Department (1989-1991). Also contains several files on Zwerlein’s other community activities including the Lion’s Club and the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society. 7 boxes; 1929-1991.

Zwerlein, Robert L.
- Letters from Robert Zwerlein (1946-1967) to his family while serving in the Navy, personal items, photographs, awards and military medals documenting his life. Also includes material collected by William Zwerlein regarding his son’s death aboard the USS Forrestal in 1967. 2 boxes; ca. 1961-2007.

Zwerlein, William C.
- Material collected by William Zwerlein (1919-2009), a life-long resident of Port Washington with 63 years of service as a volunteer firefighter with Protection Company No. 1.
