Funding the Future of the Library
The Port Washington Library Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation established in 1989 by the Library trustees and initially funded with two bequests by farsighted Port Washington residents who understood that a great public library is not possible through public funding alone. The Foundation functions as a fund management and fundraising organization with its sole aim to support the Library. Serving as its development arm, the Foundation fulfills the Library trustees’ requests for funding for a variety of needs and opportunities that are not covered by the taxpayer-approved budget and through this year has now given over 1,500,000.00 in grants to support the Library. The Foundation is led by an extremely supportive Board that as a united and cohesive group of individuals bands together to help further our mission of making the library one of the best in the country.
The Foundation solicits, receives, and manages bequests and endowments, providing funds to enhance library services at no cost to taxpayers. The Foundation provides a means whereby those wishing to make significant tax-deductible contributions to the library can do so. Under the Foundation’s by-laws, the Port Washington Public Library is the sole beneficiary of any fundraising activity by the Foundation.
