Friends & Family Weekend 2015

Friday, March 20 - March 22

All Day

The Friends of the Library invites library patrons of all ages to Friends & Family Weekend, March 20-22, which will feature events such as a Rockabilly concert, a book swap, and lectures by renowned scholars. All events are in the library’s meeting room.

The weekend kicks off on Friday March 20 with a “Sandwiched In” lecture at 12:10 p.m. featuring noted horticultural author Thomas Christopher speaking on his book “Essential Perennials.” Christopher, a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture, is a former columnist for Horticulture, House & Garden, and Country Living Gardener.  Christopher is a past speaker at the FOL’s Annual Book & Author Luncheon, and his appearance is part of the continuing FOL Meet the Author series.

At 7:30 pm Friday a “Live@PWPL” concert features “Rockabilly Crooners! With the Robert Poe Band.” This entertaining musical event is appropriate for adults and families with children 12 and over.

FOL Paperback Swap

Saturday, March 21

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Friends of the Library’s popular Paperback Swap returns! Bring your gently used adult, teen and children’s paperbacks to the library’s meeting room for a free, friendly swap. We will accept hardcover children’s books including board books. No more than 20 books per person. Books are not accepted in advance or in lobby. We stop accepting items at 3:30 p.m. Browsers welcome!

FOL University

Sunday, March 22

1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

The Friends of the Library’s stimulating FOL University program returns Sunday March 22 at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.  Modeled on the concept of  a one-day university, this events features lectures by two scholars on timely and fascinating topics, with a brief refreshment break in-between. The speakers will be Harry Chotiner of the NYU School for Professional Studies who will discuss the rise and fall of independent films, and Dr. Russell Powell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Center for Philosophy of Science at Boston University, explaining the phenomenon of “convergent evolution” and what it tells us about the nature of complex life as it has unfolded on Earth.

FOL Meet the Author Series: Hilma Wolitzer

7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Join the Friends of the Library at this special program with renown novelist and Long Island resident Hilma Wolitzer, bestselling author of “An Available Man” and many other titles. Refreshments will be served. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This event is part of the FOL’s Meet the Author Series, which in the past two years has featured Roger Rosenblatt, Nelson DeMille, Gail Sheehy, Eric Fischl, George Vecsey, and Dr. Sandeep Jauhar.
