The Friends of the Port Washington Public Library (FOL) is dedicated to strengthening the ties between our library and community, and to advancing the library’s mission as a center for life-long learning, information and culture. The Friends supports the library through volunteerism, fundraising, programming, outreach and advocacy. The FOL is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with its own volunteer board of directors. Please read our informational brochure!
Founded in 1966, the FOL is celebrating its 50th year of service to the library. Support the Friends: Click Here to Donate Now!
Annual support from the FOL is counted upon to supplement each library department’s programming and services budget. For example, we support programs ranging from Children’s Services’ “Great Library Card Adventure,” to the popular “Sandwiched In” lunchtime series for adults, to the multicultural World Festival. The Friends is also the sole sponsor of the library’s popular Museum Pass program. See the FOL Events page for information on our own special programming such as the Annual Book & Author Luncheon. You can view pictures of the the 2015 luncheon here and pictures of the 2014 luncheon here (see 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010).
In addition, the Friends oversees the Ruth D. Bogen Memorial Collection, which is devoted exclusively to literary works of significance. The Collection is supported by the Bogen Fund, an endowment created in 2000 by a generous grant from the Bogen family and which is administered by the Friends. Since its inception, the Fund has contributed more than $40,000 to the library’s book budget, adding thousands of quality books, ebooks, and audiobooks to the collection.
The Friends is the primary sponsor of the library’s online initiatives, and provided a major gift to redesign the library website. The FOL continues to support new digital features. For example, the FOL is the primary sponsor of free online homework help for K-12 students (in English and Spanish) via tutor.com.
The Friends also funds special initiatives such as the lobby bulletin boards, outdoor drop boxes, oral history publications, and materials for the ESOL program. The Friends of the Library Award is a prestigious honor recognizing extraordinary service to the library over many years.
