SACRED CITIES OF THE WORLD: Jerusalem: City of Gold, Peace and War. Since its founding by the ancient Canaanites around 3000 BCE, the mountaintop city has been ruled by Jebusites, Egyptians, Hebrews, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Turks, English, and today the Jews. The city has been heralded as the City of Gold by poets and musicians, painted by the greatest of artists, and celebrated as the center of the world by religious leaders. At the same time, Jerusalem has been one of the bloodiest of world battlefields, claimed, occupied, or ravaged by almost all the major powers of the world. Join Dr. Ronald Brown as he recounts his experiences and studies there during his five-year residence in the city and many subsequent visits. This is the first in a series of three programs; on March 9, Ron will discuss Machu Picchu. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. 3 p.m.

SANDWICHED IN: The Gettysburg Address: Politics, Performance, Participation. More than most people realize, politics influenced the Gettysburg Address. More than most historians realize, so did performance. Examining performance and politics together offers a fresh — and sometimes surprising — look at Abraham Lincoln’s famous words. In observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, join David Carlyon, writer and independent scholar, for this multi-media presentation. Dr. Carlyon holds a Ph.D. in theater history from Northwestern University and was a clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. 12:10 p.m.
