The Port Washington Public Library is a wireless “hot spot,” providing free Internet access to users of laptops and handheld devices capable of receiving wireless signals.
It’s my computer. May I do whatever I want?
You will be attached to the library’s network, and must
abide by the library’s Acceptable Use policy. The library’s
Standards of Behavior also apply while you are in the library.
Where can I connect?
Connect from almost anywhere on the library’s
upper level, as well as from the Reading Room, the Terrace, the Reference
Room, the Lobby and the Coffee Bar.
Is it secure?
Wireless Ethernet is not secure. Any user on the wireless local
area network can spy on unencrypted traffic from other wireless users.
Although wired networks tend to be more secure, the library cannot assure
the safety of your personal data when you use either our wired or wireless
internet access.
All wireless access users should have up-to-date virus protection on their laptop computers or wireless devices.
Will I be able to print?
At this time printers are not available via the wireless connection.
To print, save your data and use one of our public workstations in the
Computer Center.
How do I connect?
You will need a laptop or handheld device with
either an 802.11b or 802.11g Ethernet card, or built-in capability.
Operating system:
Your operating system must support networking, and the wireless Ethernet
card you purchase must be installed with the correct drivers for your operating
system.
If you are using Linux as your operating system, that will work also. Linux
drivers exist for many wireless network cards.
