Children entering 5th and 6th grade are invited to attend a one hour orientation after which they will be eligible to participate in the Junior Volunteer program. Once trained, participants will volunteer two hours each week from July 6 to August 13. Responsibilities include assisting with the summer reading program as well as various activities in the Children’s Room. Prospective volunteers must register to attend one of the two training sessions: Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. or Monday, June 22 at 4:00 p.m. Limited registration begins on June 1 by calling Children’s Services at 883-4400, Ext. 150.

Expectant moms and dads are invited to participate in a four-week program preparing you for childbirth and parenthood. Each week a different professional will facilitate the class. Professionals include a midwife, a board certified lactation consultant, an assistant professor of early childhood education and child development and a certified Red Cross/CPR/AED/First Aid instructor. Limited registration begins May 21. The Children’s Room is happy to announce that we have Early Literacy Kits to borrow. The different themed kits are; Transportation, ABC, New Baby, Counting, Colors, Down on the Farm, and Frog & Friends. These kits include themed picture books, audio CDs, interactive DVDs, lyrics to finger-plays and rhymes and more! Here are some guidelines for borrowing the kits: Kits may only be checked out and returned to the Children’s Services Desk Do not use Book Drop. Do not return to other libraries. Congratulations new parents! The Port Washington Public Library is proud to be part of a nationwide initiative that promotes early literacy. Born to Read was created to reach out to new parents and their babies to support the sharing of books together. This special bond between parents and children can begin from the time a child is born.
