GREAT AMERICAN HOLIDAYS: Labor Day: America Saved from Marxism. On June 28, 1894, the American Congress and President Grover Cleveland proclaimed the first Monday in September to be the capitalist day of labor. Over the following decades the government introduced the 8-hour work day, banned child labor, passed strict safety regulations, and eventually legalized unions, strikes and collective bargaining.
