AFTERNOON AT THE OPERA: Composed late in 1892 and first performed at the Teatro Regio in Turin in February 1893, Manon Lescaut was Giacomo Puccini’s first great success as an opera composer. The story was based on a controversial short novel by the Abbé Antoine François Prévost, The History of the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut, which was banned upon publication in 1731.
