3rdTHURSDAYS @ 3: Orientalism. The term “Orientalism” is used to define a group of Western artists who focus on the depiction of Eastern culture, and was a specialty of 19th century academic art. Several Orientalist painters actually traveled great distances, such as North Africa, to sketch “exotic” scenes. Delacroix, Gericault, Ingres, Gerome are a few of the many painters of this period who became known for their depictions of scenes from faraway cultures. Eroticized harem scenes became very popular at this time. Join Ines Powell for an exploration of this genre. 3 p.m.
